Bulgaria was founded in 681 AD and is the homeland of ancient civilizations. Many remnants of their cultures and the ruins of their cities, palaces and monasteries are found throughout the country.
Following centuries of Turkish control, military conflicts and fighting during both World Wars, decades of Communist Party rule, and assorted political troubles Bulgaria is finally adjusting to its switch to democracy in the early 1990s and tourism is a growth industry.

Tourism in Bulgaria
Bulgaria has enjoyed a substantial growth in income from international tourism over the past decade. Tourists come from Germany, Romania, Russia, Scandinavia, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Reports show that Bulgaria now attracts close to 7 million visitors yearly.
Ski resorts are found in Samokov, Borovets, Bansko and Pamporovo and are well-attended by skiers.
Summer resorts are located near to the Black Sea at Sozopol, Nessebur, Golden Sands, Sunny Beach, Sveti Vlas, Albena, Saints Constantine and Helena and many others.
Spa resorts such as Bankya, Hisarya, Sandanski, Velingrad, Varshets attract visitors throughout the year. Bulgaria has started to become an attractive tourist destination because of the quality of the resorts and prices below those found in Western Europe.
